Samrat has also authored several short stories, essays, and a graphic novella which was turned into a play, Strange Lines, with an Indo-Swiss cast, and staged at the National School of Drama in Delhi. Some of his works have appeared in translation in German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

A former columnist for The Hindustan Times and DNA, he now writes a column for Firstpost and OpEds and occasional reports for a range of publications. His journalistic writings have appeared in Granta in UK, the Dhaka Tribune in Bangladesh, The Japan Times in Japan, The New York Times online, and The Hindustan Times, The Times of India, The Hindu, Mint, Economic Times, The Indian Express, The New Indian Express, The Asian Age, India Today, Outlook, Caravan, Newslaundry, National Geographic Traveller and Open among others, in India.

He was the Asian Leadership Fellows Programme fellow from India at the International House of Japan in Tokyo in 2018. He is also a Chevening South Asia Journalism programme alumnus from the University of Westminster in London. His graduate degree is in electrical engineering.

His current interests include, but are not limited to, Northeast India and its near-abroad as a region, and processes such as Partition that led to the emergence of current borders. He is co-founder and Executive Editor of Partition Studies Quarterly, an independent online journal.
